Important Notes:
-
Never give your passport to anyone and avoid using locals to assist with border assistance. DO IT YOURSELF
-
Look out for speed traps when travelling back to SA (5km before the Border Post on the downhill) it is a 60 km/h zone and you will be fined R300
-
South African Rand currency (ZAR) is acceptable in Mozambique. Also US$, Euros and UK Sterling but ZAR and US$ preferable
-
Carry CERTIFIED copies of your passport and driver's license
-
STRICTLY keep to all speed limits and OBEY all traffic laws and signs. DO NOT pay bribes.
-
If the police ask for your driver’s licence hand them the certified copy. They might insist on the original. You must judge the situation. I have been driving in Mozambique for 15 years with a South African registration and have not had any problems
-
BE COURTEOUS and RESPECTFUL when stopped. It is pointless to get aggravated.
-
DO NOT CHANGE MONEY WITH ANYBODY BUT BANKS AND BONA FIDE MONEY EXCHANGERS. The guys on the side of the road will offer you an amazing rate but they are conmen of note. Be very careful. DO NOT GET DISTRACTED
-
CHECK THE STAMPS IN YOUR PASSPORT on both the South African and Mozambican side of the border before you leave the “stamping” official
-
The “Important Notes” above are basically common sense and apply to all countries
